It's important to note that some injuries may not manifest immediately after a car accident. Symptoms might appear days, weeks, or even months later. Therefore, seeking prompt medical treatment is advisable if any pain or discomfort is experienced after a car accident.

Most Common Injuries

Soft tissue injuries, which encompass damage to muscles, ligaments, and tendons, are the most common injuries arising from car accidents. Examples include "whiplash" injuries to the neck and upper back, where sudden movements during a collision stretch muscles and ligaments. Car accidents can also lead to mid-back and low-back muscle sprains, and occasionally more severe back injuries due to the impact force against the spine.

Chest injuries are common in car accidents, ranging from bruises to broken ribs and internal injuries. Collisions with the steering wheel often cause chest injuries, and seatbelts and dashboards can also contribute to such injuries.

Head injuries resulting from car accidents vary from minor to severe. Sudden stops or changes in direction can lead to unnatural movements of the head and neck, causing muscle strains and sprains. The head itself may be injured by hitting a side window or the steering wheel, potentially resulting in closed head injuries that involve bruising and tearing of brain tissue and blood vessels. Although most closed head injuries lead to concussions, more severe impacts can result in lasting brain damage.

The forces involved in car collisions similarly affect arms and legs. Side impacts may throw arms and legs against doors, and passengers' knees might hit the dashboard or seats in front of them. Depending on the collision's nature, injuries to arms and legs may include bruising, scraping, sprains, or even fractures.

According to the National Safety Council Excessive speed plays a significant role in the occurrence of traffic fatalities and injuries, impacting the driver, the vehicle, and the road itself. When drivers exceed speed limits, it diminishes their reaction time in hazardous situations, extends the distance required to bring the vehicle to a stop, and diminishes the effectiveness of safety structures on the road, such as guardrails, impact attenuators, crash cushions, median dividers, and concrete barriers, in safeguarding occupants during a collision.

In the year 2021, speeding contributed to 29% of all traffic fatalities, resulting in the loss of 12,330 lives, averaging more than 33 fatalities daily. The total number of fatal motor-vehicle crashes linked to speeding reached 11,057. A crash is classified as speeding-related if the driver faced charges related to speeding or if factors such as racing, driving too fast for conditions, or exceeding the posted speed limit were identified as contributing elements.

The year 2021 marked the third consecutive year witnessing an upsurge in speeding-related deaths. Moreover, the percentage of deaths involving speeding (29%) exceeded the historical low set in 2019 when 26% of fatalities were attributed to speeding. Speeding-related deaths experienced a 7.9% increase from 2020, reaching the highest recorded number since 2007.
